Summary:Naringenin is a flavanone commonly found in citrus and aromatic herbs that can protect against oxidative stress and inflammation. Oxidative stress can cause serious damage to tissues and organs; furthermore, it is closely related to chronic inflammation-related diseases, as reactive oxygen species can activate transcription factors that culminate in the production of pro-inflammatory molecules. The effects of naringenin against these responses are mediated by its antioxidant capacity and the induction or inhibition of signaling routes related to inflammation. Hence the current review summarizes the current knowledge of naringenin's health benefits against oxidative stress and inflammation, its mechanisms of action, and its bioavailability.
