Summary: | Stewart outlines how we can engage with more socially inclusive, wide ranging and sometime problematic interpretations of the universal themes of power and faith. Recent studies of Scotland's religious cultures have arguably done most to overcome a limiting preoccupation with top-down ideologies and perceptions. We may never be able to reconstruct what most early Scots thought or believed. We can, however, gain a better cognizance of the relationships among structures, practices and meanings, and a better sense of the interplay between socio-political contexts and the lived experience. |
