Summary:One Yb 42 nanowheel [Yb 42 L 14 (OH) 28 (OAc) 84 ] was constructed using a tridentate vanillin ligand. The external diameter of the wheel-like structure is about 3.6 nm, which allows direct visualization by TEM. It shows interesting NIR lanthanide luminescence sensing towards anions, especially to fluoride at the ppm level. The NIR luminescence sensing responses of a 42-metal lanthanide nanowheel [Yb 42 L 14 (OH) 28 (OAc) 84 ] to anions, especially to fluoride, were investigated.
