Summary:Five intermetallic Cu-Li-Sn compounds have been synthesized by induction melting and annealing. Their phase purity was checked by powder X-ray diffraction. Enthalpies of solution of compounds in lithium or tin at 873 K were determined by drop calorimetry and extrapolated to limiting enthalpies of solution. The limiting enthalpies of solution of copper in lithium and lithium in tin at 873 K were measured in the same way. Enthalpies of formation of the ternary compounds were calculated according to Hess' law and compared with enthalpies of mixing in the liquid. An analogy between formation enthalpies and mixing enthalpies was found. [Display omitted] •Synthesis of phase pure intermetallic ternary Cu-Li-Sn compounds.•Improved method for determination of formation enthalpies by high-temperature solution calorimetry.•Comparison of stability of solid compounds and liquid.
