Vapour phase tert-butylation of naphthalene over molecular sieve catalysts

The vapour phase tert-butylation of naphthalene was carried out over modified Y, MCM-41 and SAPO-5 catalysts. CeY was found to be better catalyst among the catalysts screened for this reaction at 200 °C reaction temperature and 0.5 h −1 weight hourly space velocity (WHSV). Various reaction parameter...

Summary:The vapour phase tert-butylation of naphthalene was carried out over modified Y, MCM-41 and SAPO-5 catalysts. CeY was found to be better catalyst among the catalysts screened for this reaction at 200 °C reaction temperature and 0.5 h −1 weight hourly space velocity (WHSV). Various reaction parameters like reaction temperature, mole ratio, WHSV and time on stream were studied for this reaction. Acidity of the catalysts was determined using stepwise temperature programmed desorption (STPD) technique and correlated to the product selectivity. Attempt has been made to explain the shape selectivity of catalyst and the product selectivity.
