Summary: | This work investigates the hardness of both silicone rubber and polyurethane rubber cured by ionizing radiation. Shore A hardness is used to characterize the subject elastomers in relation to the crosslinking process. Various formulations of both materials have been investigated in order to achieve the optimum cure conditions. A small amount of a chemical curing agent has been incorporated in some formulations in order to reduce the required dose to achieve full cure conditions. Silicone rubber improved in hardness with increasing absorbed dose, whereas hardness remained constant over a broad range of absorbed doses for polyurethane rubber. |
