Summary:To the Editor: Rupp et al. (July 29 issue) 1 and Mecklenburg et al. (August 26 issue) 2 provide strong evidence that a program of therapy involving insulin-infusion pumps can substantially improve glucose homeostasis in diabetic patients. We are writing to underscore the role that patient counseling and training may have had in the improved metabolic status reported in both studies. Data from a diabetes outpatient-education program in southwest Washington State further support the efficacy of patient education in improving metabolic control. The curriculum for this program comprised 16 hours of standard instruction in the understanding of diabetes, self-care, and home monitoring . . .
