We are writing to underscore the role that patient counseling and training may have had in the improved metabolic status reported in both studies. Data from a diabetes outpatient-education program in southwest Washington State further support the efficacy of patient education in improving metabolic control. The curriculum for this program comprised 16 hours of standard instruction in the understanding of diabetes, self-care, and home monitoring . . .
