Summary:To the Editor: Bulimia, a disorder characterized by recurrent episodes of eating binges usually followed by self-induced vomiting or laxative abuse, affects over 5 million Americans and appears to be increasing in prevalence. 1 We have described a 16-year-old girl in whom binge eating combined with the failure to administer insulin led to hospitalization 2 ; six similar cases have been reported recently as well. 3 4 5 Since our initial report, we have evaluated six additional patients with bulimia admitted to the Diabetes Treatment Unit of Joslin Clinic, in whom poor control of diabetes proved to be attributable to their eating disorder (Table 1). . . .
