Summary:To the Editor: Tartrazine, also known as FD&C yellow No. 5, is a color additive used in a myriad of foods, pharmaceuticals, beverages, and cosmetics. Adverse reactions due to ingestion of tartrazine-containing products can result in generalized urticaria, angioedema, rhinitis, and bronchial asthma in susceptible persons. 1 , 2 These reactions to tartrazine occur primarily in patients who are also intolerant to aspirin. About 15 per cent of aspirin-intolerant patients cross-react to tartrazine. 3 The number of persons intolerant to tartrazine in the United States has been estimated by the FDA to be approximately 50,000 to 100,000. 4 Tartrazine-intolerant patients should be advised to avoid . . .
