Adverse reactions due to ingestion of tartrazine-containing products can result in generalized urticaria, angioedema, rhinitis, and bronchial asthma in susceptible persons.

These reactions to tartrazine occur primarily in patients who are also intolerant to aspirin. About 15 per cent of aspirin-intolerant patients cross-react to tartrazine.

The number of persons intolerant to tartrazine in the United States has been estimated by the FDA to be approximately 50,000 to 100,000.
