Summary:The first gas-phase infrared spectrum of an alkaline earth metal oxide is reported. CaO was produced in a fast flow system by oxidation of hot metal vapor with nitrous oxide. Eight transitions of the fundamental band of calcium oxide have been observed with tunable diode laser radiation. A value of 722.3976(14) cm −1 for the band center has been obtained.
