Distribution of metals in tissues of the common carp (Cyprinus carpio L.)
The aim of the present study was to investigate the distribution of selected metals (As, Cd, Pb, Hg, Cr, Cu, Zn) in tissues of Cyprinus carpio reared in ponds. Muscles, livers, kidneys, spleens, gills, ovaries and testicles from 125 carps (aged 3-4 years, weighing 2,312+/-583 g) from 10 fishponds in...

Summary: | The aim of the present study was to investigate the distribution of selected metals (As, Cd, Pb, Hg, Cr, Cu, Zn) in tissues of Cyprinus carpio reared in ponds. Muscles, livers, kidneys, spleens, gills, ovaries and testicles from 125 carps (aged 3-4 years, weighing 2,312+/-583 g) from 10 fishponds in the Czech republic were analysed. Metal concentrations were determined by the AAS, Hg was determined using a cold-vapour AAS analyse (AMA 254). Our results showed different affinities of metals to different tissues. The highest concentrations of As and Hg were in muscle tissue, Cu in the liver, Cd and Zn in the kidneys. The lowest metal concentrations (particularly of Cd) were found in the spleen, gills and gonads. Pb concentrations in the individual tissues were low and practically identical. Cr concentrations were also balanced with sporadic significant differences. Significantly higher concentrations of Cu, Cr and Zn were found in the ovaries than in the testicles. The study showed that meat and gonads of carp from Czech fishponds are safe because of low levels of the metals investigated. |
