Summary:Dr. David Satcher as Surgeon General consistently documented these disparities published multiple reports of the disparity as have others.3 In my field of mental health I noted that African Americans continued to be over diagnosed with schizophrenia and underdiagnosed with depression or post traumatic stress disorder despite public awareness campaigns, changes in diagnostic instruments, and a extensive published literature.4 Why have these various approaches not been successful? Studies have shown that medical students and residents continue to harbor face beliefs about race despite their education.5 Current medical education may have to be changed to specifically target misinformation. Outside of medicine changes such as the election of an African American national president, and election of African American presidents in the American Medical Association shows that some change is possible.
