Summary:An experimental investigation of near resonance free surface waves in a rectangular basin is described and the results compared to computations. These experiments show strong nonlinear interactions exist between excited near resonance modes. Numerical computations exhibit a qualitatively similar behavior though the details of the interactions vary slightly. A simple mathematical analysis is also presented to provide an intuitive understanding of the problem.
