•Cu-Al composites are produced by new method accumulative high-pressure torsion.•Mixing of dissimilar metals is homogeneous by accumulative high-pressure torsion.•Intermetallic compounds are formed during deformation.
The article presents the first results of producing metal-matrix composites by accumulative high-pressure torsion method (ACC HPT). Three-layer Cu-Al-Cu stacks were subject to high-pressure torsion at room temperature and 6 GPa for 10 revolutions under a conventional high-pressure torsion scheme and using ACC HPT. The microstructure was analyzed using X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electronic microscopy (SEM), energy-dispersive spectrometry (EDS). ACC HPT was shown to result in mixing of initial components within the entire specimen volume while conventional HPT showed mixing on specimen edges. The XRD showed the formation of intermetallics of Al2Cu and Al4Cu9 in the structure of Cu-Al composites during ACC HPT. |
