Summary:The composition and catalytic properties of palladium(II) complexes supported on poly(vinylpyridine) in the hydrogenation of unsaturated aldehydes and alcohols in water and ethanol are discussed. The catalytic activity has been shown to depend on the composition of the complexes and the valency state of the palladium contained therein. The reaction rate is also determined by the ability of the complexes to swell in organic solvents and by the diffusion of reactants to active centres within the bulk of the polymer-metal complexes.
