Summary:The etching of alkali halide crystals is reviewed. After a brief introduction to crystal growth and its kinetics, diffusion controlled dissolution, structure of solutions and theories of etching, the experimental data on macroscopic dissolution and on the revelation of etch pits and variation of their morphology are surveyed and discussed. In the light of experimental results and discussion, some guidelines are then formulated for selecting dislocation etchants for alkali halide crystals. Finally, scope for further work is indicated. Tables of reported dislocation etchants and polishing solutions are also given.
