Emission of excited atoms from solid argon under ion bombardment

A solid argon target was prepared at a temperature of 20 K under thoroughly controlled conditions. An intense line spectrum of light from argon atoms sputtered by keV Ar + and Ne + ions was observed. Some conclusions on the mechanism of excitation are drawn.
