Summary: | Prior to the vitrectomy, the 67 patients in this study had excellent visual acuity with average vision between 20/20 and 20/40. [...]any subsequent complication would reduce this already normal vision. Cataract formation increases substantially with time, with long-term studies indicating cataract surgery rates of the order of 53% to 76%.2 Since 70% of patients (ie, 47 out of 67) were myopic, cataract extraction in these myopic patients would result in anisometropia with the need for the wearing of a contact lens or clear lens extraction in the fellow eye. [...]cataract surgery in myopic subjects has an incidence of subsequent retinal detachment of 2% to 8%.3 Seventeen percent of patients in this study did not have PVD. |
