The effect of diazinon on haematological indices of common carp (Cyprinus carpio)

The aim of our study was to assess the effect of diazinon [0,0-diethyl 0-(2-isopropyl-6-methylpyrimidin-4yl)phosphorothioate] contained in the pesticide Basudin 600 EW (600 g/L of diazinon) on carp (Cyprinus carpio). Haematological examination of one- to two-year-old 25 experimental and 15 control a...

Summary:The aim of our study was to assess the effect of diazinon [0,0-diethyl 0-(2-isopropyl-6-methylpyrimidin-4yl)phosphorothioate] contained in the pesticide Basudin 600 EW (600 g/L of diazinon) on carp (Cyprinus carpio). Haematological examination of one- to two-year-old 25 experimental and 15 control animals was carried out at the end of an acute toxicity test (Basudin 600 EW used in concentration of 32.5 mg/L during 96 h). The 96hLC50 value of Basudin 600 EW for carp juveniles was 26.7 mg/L. The experimental animals showed significantly lower values of erythrocytes (RBC), haemoglobin concentration (Hb) and haematocrit (PCV) compared to the control group. Values of mean corpuscular volume, mean corpuscular haemoglobin and mean corpuscular haemoglobin concentration were comparable in both groups. In contrary, after the exposure to the pesiticide, there was a significant decrease in leukocytes and lymphocytes, whereas a significant increase in myelocytes and metamyelocytes was observed. The diazinon-based pesticide Basudin 600 EW was classified among harmful substances for fish. Changes in values of both erythrocyte and leukocyte concentrations after exposure to diazinon-based preparation may be attributed to the disruption of haematopoiesis as well as to a decrease of non-specific immunity.
