Mass separation of image gas field ions in the field ion microscope

A simple magnetic mass separator is described which can be inserted in a conventional field ion microscope in order to identify the mass of the imaging-gas ions. The mini-mass spectrometer has been designed to allow a mass separation of Δ m/ m ≈ 0.1 from small surface areas of as few as ≈ 100 surfac...

Summary:A simple magnetic mass separator is described which can be inserted in a conventional field ion microscope in order to identify the mass of the imaging-gas ions. The mini-mass spectrometer has been designed to allow a mass separation of Δ m/ m ≈ 0.1 from small surface areas of as few as ≈ 100 surface sites. An application to a FIM study of hydrogen oxidation on Pt will be given.
