Summary:Within the framework of the point-charge crystal field approximation, the various state dipole moments are caluclated for TR 3+ impurity ions in polar hosts. This model has been tested on LiNbO 3:Er 3+ polar crystals by comparison of calculated values with experimental ones, obtained from electrical responses of the investigated crystals to optical excitation in the impurity ion absorption bands. Besides the measurement of some spectroscopic characteristics, this approach allows to estimate the values of impurity ion electronic polarizabilities.
