Summary: | Wear resistant TiN coatings were used to protect tools both for heavy cold forming and also for form cutting. Specific wear characteristics were studied by optical and SEM analysis and compared with surface roughness measurements. The life time of the forming tools was improved by 350–450%, whilst for the form cutting tools the improvement was 650–910%, increasing with decreasing tool surface roughness. A lower tool roughness also resulted in a better surface finish of the workpieces. Better understanding of the wear behaviour helped us to change tool geometry to improve its efficiency. |
