Summary:Starting with the one-dimensional form of the Reynolds lubrication equation with a Barus fluid it is argued that the pressure spike characteristic of heavily loaded metallic contacts is closely logarithmic but not singular. Using results from rigid wedge indentation theory the implications upon the deformation and stress distribution within the contacting surfaces are examined. In particular, the surface stress concentration (principal shear stress) is examined and found to be less than the hertzian value for contacts operating in practical regions of parameter space. The influence of the familiar operating parameters g 3 and g 4 upon the spike's properties is also investigated.
