Summary:The use of performance contracting in human services raises issues related to efficacy & implementation. A conceptual overview is given on the subject, & examples are described from several areas of the human services where performance contracts are now being used. Important factors to be considered before performance contracting can be utilized as a feasible alternative are advanced. Ways in which the practice may be used to improve service delivery are suggested, & caution is recommended to prevent the unthoughtful application of performance contracting.
