Summary: | French scholars such as Pichon and M.-C. L'Huillier tend to see the Panegyrici as expressions of aspirational Gallic Latinity, which implies a cultural or ideological purpose on behalf of the compiler. In this context for L Huillier, Pliny's work was part of the orator's political culture, and the optimus princeps was a standard reference point, albeit perhaps symbolic, in both literary and political terms. Here, Ruiz take on that enquiry and offers a preliminary response to the issue by focusing on passages that contain echoes stricto sensu of Pliny on political matters so as to refine the understanding of the rhetorical function of Pliny's Panegyricus in the corpus as a whole. |
