Summary: | It is necessary to analyze the finite amplitude waves in intake and exhaust systems for predicting both the acoustic characteristics and the pressure losses in silencers of internal combustion engines. Since three-dimensional analysis of the gas flow in the entire intake and exhaust systems may not be realistic, the gas flow in the silencers has been calculated under actual engine conditions by using a numerical analysis which employs the one-dimensional and three-dimensional approaches. The results show that the present method is useful for examining better configurations of silencers. By comparing the results of three-dimensional approach with the results of one dimensional methodology, it has been found that the noise level may be estimated to be a lower value in high frequency with the one-dimensional methodology. Furthermore, it has been shown that the present method is applicable to precise analysis of both the sound field and the velocity field in the silencers. |
