A variational approach to constrained null controllability for the heat equation

Summary:We treat the problem of constrained null controllability for heat equations on bounded smooth domains of the Euclidean space. The aim is to drive solutions to rest in a finite final time with control subject to lie in closed balls. The study is focused on both internal distributed and boundary controls on open subsets of the domain and its boundary respectively. Using a variational characterization, we present a constructive method to build the steering controls.
