Summary:ABSTRACT A compact split‐horn antenna with a high‐power handling capability to be able to radiate high‐power pulse energy through vacuum dielectric window into the free space without the occurrence of dielectric/air breakdown is proposed at S‐band. To increase the threshold of dielectric/air and vacuum/dielectric breakdown, it uses the special E‐plane field shaper at the edges of the split‐horn aperture. The proposed split‐horn antenna has a high‐power handling capability of 50 MW which is five times larger than that of the conventional split‐horn antenna of 10 MW for the air breakdown threshold of 30 kV cm−1 as well as a similar antenna gain and a radiation pattern. © 2016 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
