Summary:The pyrolysis of rice husk yields char and gas along with a liquid condensate containing the tar fraction. This fraction contains hydrocarbons, phenolic compounds and other chemicals. The presence of phenolic compounds gives it a toxic characteristic which led to the study of its possible use as a germicide. Fractional distillation of the tar yields mostly light and heavy oil fractions and a residual pitch. These former fractions, as well as the composite liquid fraction, were tested for germicidal activity by determining the phenol coefficient. All the fractions showed high germicidal activity, with the composite fraction having a phenol coefficient of 3·3.
