Summary:•A BODIPY-based fluorescent probe for chiral amino acid of d-glutamic acid was developed.•The probe displays good selectivity for d-glutamic acid and its fluorescence enhance about 5 folds with good linear trend.•The probe realized the application in living cells for chiral amino acids. A BODIPY-based fluorescent probe (PGA) for d-glutamic acid utilizing biomimetic imine metathesis reaction with pyridoxal-5′-phosphate and chiral 1,2-diaminocyclohexane as the detecting group. PGA displayed good selectivity and sensitivity for d-Glu in water. Moreover, PGA can image d-Glu in living cells.
