Observation of a metastable B2 phase in rapidly solidified ribbons of NbAl alloys

A TEM study has been conducted of the phases in melt-spun ribbons of binary Nb-Al alloys, giving attention to whether the A2 or B2 version forms upon rapid solidification. The effects of heat treatment are noted, with a view to the significance of observed effects to the origins of the B2 phase. Whi...

Summary:A TEM study has been conducted of the phases in melt-spun ribbons of binary Nb-Al alloys, giving attention to whether the A2 or B2 version forms upon rapid solidification. The effects of heat treatment are noted, with a view to the significance of observed effects to the origins of the B2 phase. While the A2 structure is exhibited in as-spun ribbon grains, heat treatment results in A2, A2 + B2, and B2 + A15, respectively, in the cases of 9.1, 13.5, and 16.9 percent Al Nb-Al compositions.
