Summary:This article considers trends in biographical studies of Mary Wollstonecraft and her place in the history of feminism, linking these to changing ideas about the relationship of past, present and future. Early accounts of Wollstonecraft project her life as emblematic of the future, assuming a sense of direction in historical developments. Later twentieth-century accounts depict her life as marked by inconsistency and changes of direction, implying an open-ended future. The more recent accounts bear the impress of a view of history as contingent, characterized by discontinuities between past and present, and changing with the observer's vantage point.
