Summary: | The composition for predominant taxa and susceptibility of individual strains in simetryn treated and untreated phytoplankton communities was studied in experimental ponds. Simetryn was applied weekly at 20 ug or 40 ug per litre between June and July. Centric diatoms persisted for longer in treated ponds. Chlorophyll-a concentrations increased in control ponds in 10 d and then declined in 20 d, probably because of grazing. Species compositions are depicted. All strains isolated from treated ponds were tolerant to simetryn whereas strains isolated from control ponds were susceptible. The susceptibility of different strains of Scenedesmus gutwinskii var. heterospina isolated from the 2 types of ponds differed. Tolerance of isolated strains persisted for 2 years indicating genetic change on exposure to herbicide. There are 32 references. |
