See PDF.] High density of young Laminaria ochroleuca specimens at the northern edge of the Messina Strait (Blue ellipse) testify to a potential recovery of the supposed extinct kelp forests (yellow area in Di Geronimo and Giacobbe 1987, modified map) The first evidence of a drastic population decline arose in 1995, when only a single group of three aged specimens was observed during a ROV investigation covering the whole Sicilian side of the MS (Giacobbe, unpublished POP’95 Report). The healthy condition of the observed specimens testifies to a clear reversal of the decade-long decline of this threatened population.
