Summary:Ni–Fe-based superalloy XH-43 is extensively used in aerospace applications due to high creep resistance, oxidation resistance and retention of its mechanical properties at higher temperatures. Complex geometrical components like LH2 exhaust casings are made through investment casting process. In the present case, leakage was observed in an exhaust casing casting during helium leak check after the high temperature–pressure test. Investigation through detailed X-ray microscopy analysis and optical microscopy revealed interconnected micro-shrinkage porosities opening to the surface at a corner location. The cause of leakage is attributed to the presence of longer through-thickness interconnected shrinkage porosities in the casting.
