Summary:Culex quinquefasciatus are amongst the most commonly found mosquitoes in Pakistan. Besides biting and annoying, these mosquitoes have the potential to transmit many vector-borne diseases such as japanese encephalitis, west nile fever etc. Therefore, the current study was planned to test most commonly used chemicals belonging to Organophosphates (Profenofos, Chlorpyrifos, Temephos) and Pyrethroids (Bifenthrin, Lambda-cyhalothrin, Deltamethrin) against Cx. quinquefasciatus following WHO guidelines. The results revealed median lethal concentration (LC 50 ) value of most effective insecticides against larval population; 0.02 mg/l for Temephos and 0.003 mg/l for Bifenthrin among Organophoshates and Pyrethroids respectively. Adulticidal toxicity of Deltamethrin 5 WP was 5.66 mg/l. These insecticides were proved to be more effective against different stages of Cx. quinquefasciatus that might be helpful in designing an effective Integrated Mosquito Management (IMM) program.
