Summary:The electrochemical corrosion behavior of an aged Fe-18Cr-15Mn-0.66 N high-nitrogen austenitic stainless steel in 3.5 wt.% NaCl solution was studied using the measurements of polarization curves and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, and the composition of the passive films formed on the HNSS was investigated using x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). XPS analyses results showed that the passive films formed in this solution were composed of Cr oxide/hydroxide (mainly) and iron oxides (partially). The XPS depth profile suggested that near the passive film /HNSS interface, both Cr and Fe contents increased, but the Cr and Fe oxide/hydroxide contents decreased.
