Calcium Hydroxyapatite/Potassium Alginate Organomineral Composites: Synthesis and Properties

The co-precipitation of calcium hydroxyapatite Ca 10 (PO 4 ) 6 (OH) 2 (HA) and natural biopolymer, potassium alginate (PA) [C 6 H 7 KO 6 ] n , from an aqueous solution of the CaCl 2 –(NH 4 ) 2 HPO 4 –NH 3 –[C 6 H 7 KO 6 ] n –H 2 O system (25 о C) was used to synthesize HA/PA organomineral composites...

Summary:The co-precipitation of calcium hydroxyapatite Ca 10 (PO 4 ) 6 (OH) 2 (HA) and natural biopolymer, potassium alginate (PA) [C 6 H 7 KO 6 ] n , from an aqueous solution of the CaCl 2 –(NH 4 ) 2 HPO 4 –NH 3 –[C 6 H 7 KO 6 ] n –H 2 O system (25 о C) was used to synthesize HA/PA organomineral composites based on nanocrystalline HA containing 0.1, 0.2, 0.3, and 0.4 wt % PA. The synthesis products were identified by powder X-ray diffraction, thermal analysis, infrared spectroscopy, scanning and transmission electron microscopy, and electron spectroscopy for chemical analysis.
