Summary: | A large-scale read/write head model for perpendicular magnetic recording similar to that described in ref. 1 was constructed. The perpendicular field components between the head and image plane were measured and analyzed over a range of controlled direct currents in the main pole (N1) and saturable subcore (N2) coils. The fringing field profiles were found to have values between those of a probe head type and a nonsymmetrical thin film type. However, under certain conditions the field gradient in the gap region of this configuration can be significantly greater than that of a probe head. This is desirable to minimize record demagnetization. This type of head design combines the features of a probe head for writing and a ring head for reading. The flexibility of field profile control of this design also offers the possibility of using a large-scale version for particle perpendicular orientation. |
