Summary:The chemical composition of the surfaces of γ-irradiated polytetrafluoroethylene and polychlorotrifluoroethylene plates has been studied by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). In the chemical composition of irradiated polytetrafluoroethylene, the concentration of fluorine decreased and the concentrations of carbon and oxygen increased as a result of the degradation of the main polymer chain with the formation of low-molecular-weight compounds and the oxidation of free radicals stabilized on the surface of the irradiated polymer. The chemical composition of the polychlorotrifluoroethylene surface revealed by analyzing the XPS spectrum noticeably changed after γ-irradiation with a decrease in the concentration of carbon and an increase in the concentrations of fluorine, oxygen, and chlorine.
