Summary:The influence of state parameters on the properties of water fluids was analyzed from the viewpoint of their correspondence to simple models of ideal gas and incompressible liquid. The main characteristics of regions in which the physical states of the fluid are qualitatively different were determined: (1) rarefied vapor, (2) pre-critical water, (3) subcritical water, (4) dense vapor, (5) supercritical fluid, and (6) nearly ideal gas. The boundaries of these regions are set by the values of temperature and density, which determine the ratio between the energies of thermal motion and intermolecular interactions. The applications of water fluids depending on the density, dielectric constant, and ionic product, which determine their properties as a solvent, reaction medium, reagent, and catalyst for various processes, were briefly characterized.
