Summary:This study presents the results of an investigation of the lacquer objects excavated from the Orgoyton and Ilmovaya pad burial grounds in Tzabaikalia (1st century BC–1st century CE). This study is devoted to the examination of the materials used for the lacquer coating on the objects. Polarization Microscopy and Scanning Electron Microscopy/Energy Dispersive X-ray Spectroscopy (SEM/EDS) analyzes were applied for pigment identification. The results show a multilayer structure of the preparatory layers of the lacquer coating. Aluminosilicates, finely ground bone, possibly burnt, calcium containing minerals (chalk or lime) were found in the ground layers. Vermilion was for the red color of the top paint layer of both red-coated artifacts.
