Physical defects in fiber optics: A theoretical framework in phase space

A Gaussian symplectic map is used to obtain the Wigner distribution function (WDF) of an optical fiber sectioned by a media with different refractive index. It is found that the WDF after the defect is simply the original Gaussian corrected by a polynomial term.
