Vapor-Phase Condensation of Formaldehyde and Acetaldehyde into Acrolein over Zeolites

The vapor-phase condensation of formaldehyde and acetaldehyde into acrolein was investigated. Zeolite catalysts; e.g. Y-faujasite, mordenite, ZSM-5, and volcanic tuff have been tested in this aldol reaction. The best results were obtained when modified volcanic tuff was used. The catalytic activity...

Summary:The vapor-phase condensation of formaldehyde and acetaldehyde into acrolein was investigated. Zeolite catalysts; e.g. Y-faujasite, mordenite, ZSM-5, and volcanic tuff have been tested in this aldol reaction. The best results were obtained when modified volcanic tuff was used. The catalytic activity seems to depend on the balance between acidic and basic properties.
