Summary:In this letter, we focus on topology construction of provider-independent overlays to improve the resilience of the Internet. A provider-independent overlay is usually deployed across a multi-provider network. If the underlying network has a similar topology to that of the AS-level Internet, we show that the overlay resilience is very close to the optimal solution if the overlay connectivity is described by a regular graph. We arrive at this conclusion based on extensive simulations comparing the performance of various overlay construction algorithms exploiting well-known AS-level Internet topology datasets.
