Summary:A novel and simple etching method for MgO {100} by using a C 2H 2-O 2 combustion-flame has been developed. Etch pits appearing on the {100} surfaces revealed that the etching has proceeded along the screw dislocation core which lies in the directions of 〈110〉 on {110}. This is in accordance with the {110}〈110〉 glide systems in MgO reported previously.
