Summary:There exists a large amount of published grinding data which is being augmented continually with results arising from further research. However, it is difficult to make use of these research findings because they are fragmented and are often presented in terms of a variety of combinations of grinding parameters. An effort has been made using a computer database system approach to store the vast amount of existing grinding data, to retrieve the stored data via user interface and to present these data in the user-specified format for practical applications. The present paper introduces a grinding database system — GDbase-I — which was designed originally for the evaluation of grinding models and the comparison of grinding data. However, it can be used also for the estimation of grinding output parameters if the grinding conditions used are in accordance with what was recorded in a data file. The paper describes in detail the data structure, the representation model of grinding data, the transformation of grinding coefficients and the structure of the database system. Some application examples of the system are given in the paper.
