Knowledge, attitudes, and practices of dentists of different specialties regarding nasoalveolar molding in patients with cleft lip and palate - A cross-sectional study

Aim: The aim of this study was to assess and copare the knowledge, attitude, and practice (KAP) of dentists of different specialties toward the presurgical nasoalveolar molding (PNAM) procedure in cleft patients. Materials and Methods: A questionnaire-based cross-sectional study was done in which pediatric dentists, prosthodontists, orthodontists, and oral surgeons were included. The questionnaire was circulated to them through personal interviews or Google Forms, and responses were recorded. Results: Results were analyzed using the Chi-square test. The results showed that specialists from the concerned branches, which comprise the cleft team, are aware of the general concept of PNAM, but a very small fraction of them are practicing or are confident in techniques regarding PNAM. There was no statistically significant difference between the KAP regarding PNAM among specialties. Conclusion: No statistically significant difference was seen between dental specialists regarding PNAM. They had a positive attitude toward PNAM, but the knowledge and practice were quite less. However, there is a strong need for programs that can enhance the Knowledge and practices of dentists for PNAM therapy in cleft lip and palate patients.
