Structural and multiferroic characterization of BiFeO3-PbTiO3-based solid solution with an extra phase

Summary:Solid solution between bismuth ferrite and lead titanate exhibits high potential to deliver excellent multiferroic performance. However, the mechanism is still not clear, especially that the attentions paid to the formation and influence of extra phases are lacking. Here, we revealed a new extra phase in La/Ga-doped BiFeO3-PbTiO3 solid solution, which was demonstrated to be Pb(Fe,Ga)12O19 by energy dispersive spectroscopy and multi-axis electron diffraction techniques. Such Pb(Fe,Ga)12O19 phase could be controllably manipulated by exceeding the content of Pb and Fe in the BiFeO3-PbTiO3-based ceramics, and has been demonstrated to play an important role in improving the ferromagnetism.
