Summary: | White Etching Structures (WES) similar to white etching areas observed in rolling bearings have been obtained after conducting High Pressure Torsion tests (HPT) on annealed AISI 52100-disc samples. This paper presents results from the detailed analysis of these WES using Electron Backscatter Diffraction (EBSD) and Energy-dispersive X-ray Spectroscopy (EDS). EBSD analysis suggests WES consisted of a nano structured material, whilst EDS analysis revealed redistributions of carbon and chromium contents inside WES compared to the surrounding matrix. It appears the plastic deformation induced by HPT has led to degradation and dissolution of the carbides present in the as annealed microstructure and the formation of a nanocrystalline structure. No evidence of recrystallization process was registered either inside WES or in their vicinities.
•High Pressure Torsion tests (HPT) used to produce White Etching Structures (WES) on annealed AISI 52100 bearing steel.•SEM /BSI used to map regions affected by WES at the top surface and inside of sample discs.•EBSD to analyse microstructural evolution and WES formation during HPT.•EDS to study C, Cr, Al and S dissolution from carbides and non-metallic inclusions. |
